Cultivation Creativity – Part V

Virginia Woolf wrote of needing “a room of one’s own”. This is a universal need of a creative artist, whether a painter, writer, dancer, or sculptor. Art takes space. An artist needs the space for solitude and for the execution of the work of art. Unfortunately, space is sometimes hard to come by. We must be creative in finding the space we need as artists. It is not acceptable to have a box in a closet that contains the art supplies needed to work with. If that is the case, the artist will not work as consistently as is necessary to grow. I will talk next time about how often you need to work; for now I will address the way to get the space you need.

Sometimes an artist’s focus needs to center on creating the right environment conducive to creating. The minimum space would be a corner of a room containing a desk or table, a chair, and access to water. This space needs to be set up and available to work at all the time. That is the bare minimum. It would be much better to have an entire room dedicated to your art. This room need not always be in a house. I have friends who have set up a shed on their property that becomes an art studio. This arrangement is especially good for those who work with clay or glass and have need of a kiln. An artist who lives in New Hampshire was one of my creativity clients. She had a shed that she used for a painting studio during the summer months. It was not heated, so she moved all of her art supplies to a rather dark basement during the winter months. Her creativity was hampered during this time. She was not happy with the work she produced in the winter months. Our coaching sessions began to center on how she could “winterize” her shed and continue working through the cold months. She installed double pane windows and a small space heater and no longer had to pack up for the winter. Her output of high quality work soared year round as a result of this small investment in her environment.

Ten years ago, I had a studio built on to my home. It was the best gift I ever gave myself! The space was large with a closet to hold framed paintings, plenty of storage space for supplies, an eight foot table to work on, an easel, and even a small refrigerator for my acrylic palette. Last year, my husband and I moved into a small apartment while we looked for a new home. I wasn’t about to give up my studio space. I moved my work table into a garage, brought in full spectrum lights and a space heater and continued to work. It was not an ideal studio, but sufficient to keep my creativity alive.

Some artists rent studio space away from their homes. Many communities have co-ops where artists share studio space for a small monthly rental fee. There is an advantage to this arrangement in that it allows for community with other artists and sometimes even a place to display and sell work.

I encourage you to think about where you can create a space to pursue your creativity. Get away from the box in the closet and set up “a room of your own”.

How to Carry Out Ear Lobe Stretching

Knowing how to carry out ear lobe stretching properly can help save you from a great deal of pain and grief, because if carried out the wrong way, stretching earlobes can damage your ears.

Ear lobe stretching, also known as ear lobe gauging or earlobe stretching, is a very old practice used by old civilizations as a status symbol or for religious reasons. It was not just restricted to earlobes, and was applied to lips, tongues and other parts of the body, sometimes to monumental levels. The same basic technique is used in each case, irrespective of the part of the body concerned.

Most ear lobe stretching, or gauging, is followed by ear jewelry designed to fit the expanded hole in the lobe. These can be traditional earrings, hanging decorations or even flesh tunnels designed to emphasis the hole through the ear lobe. These can be made of plastic or metal, and often gold since it is a non-allergenic metal.

The first stage is to have your ears pierced in the normal away, although if you intend to stretch the piercing then it is strongly advised that you have the initial piercing carried out by a professional who can pierce your ear to 16 gauge, or 1.2-1.3 mm. The actual millimeter equivalents of the various gauging can vary between sources, but most non-pros can pierce to gauge 20 – 18 (0.8 – 1.0 mm). Surgical steel is best, followed by gold and so on. It must be metal – if you can. If you can, get the tapers autoclaved by a tattoo salon then placed in a clean wrap for you take home. Otherwise boil them first. You should wash the taper with disinfectant before use, and then rub it over with a lubricant such as emu oil or jojoba oil – or anything water based. Vaseline and other oil-based lubricants can store germs, so don’t use these.

Here are the steps:

Preparation

First have a shower or wash your ears with warm water. This makes them softer and helps prevent tearing. Then wash your hands and earlobe with an anti-bacterial soap – preferably not perfumed. Smear the antiseptic over the taper and then you are all set to start.

Ear Lobe Stretching Methods

There are many methods you can use, such as tapering, Teflon taping, weights and scalpeling that involves cutting out the larger hole with a scalpel, but it is not recommended that you try that yourself! The old method, used by Africans for their ears and lips, involves hanging a weight form the piercing and stretching the hole mechanically. Again not recommended!

The best way for you to use yourself is tapering. There are three basic ways of doing this, but the principle is the same with each: you insert the thin end of the taper into your healed piercing and then work the taper through until the thicker end is reached. There are now three possibilities for tapered ear lobe stretching:

Insertion Taper: This is about 3 inches long, and is gradually inserted into the ear. The earring or other jewelry is inserted right at the back (thicker) of the end of the taper, and then all are pushed right through. The taper comes out and the ring with the larger pin is in your ear.

Taper Spike: This is inserted in the same way as the insertion taper, only the jewelry doesn’t follow. The spike is retained in the hole with elastic bands until it has healed and then the next size is inserted – and so on until the required gauge has been reached.

Taper Ring: The earring itself has a tapered spike that is inserted in the same as above, and then fixed as normal.

Teflon: Basically you add a layer or two of Teflon tape to your ear jewelry and force it into your piercing. Wait a few weeks and then do the same again and so on. It works eventually, but is not as guaranteed as the tapering methods to reach any specific size, and is basically a simple DIY method. This could be tried if you can’t afford the tapers, and not subject to bacterial infection as the other types of polymers or plastics.

You can also use the dead stretching method, involving simply forcing the larger ear jewelry into your smaller piercing. This can hurt and is not recommended, although many use it. It can go wrong if it causes bleeding.

After-Care of Ear Lobe Stretching

Irrespective of the method used, the ear lobe should be washed with anti-bacterial soap after each stretching. Sea salt can be used to keep the piercing clean at a high concentration (about 3 tablespoons in sufficient water to soak your ear lobe in it). Clean it frequently until fully healed before carrying on with the next gauge. Never use any alcohol-based or peroxide-based antiseptic because they can destroy white blood cells and dehydrate the cells around the piercing.

Stick to these rules and you should be able to carry out your own ear lobe stretching and get the result that you want. One important thing to remember: this should not hurt much, and should not bleed. In either of these cases stop, wait until your piercing has healed and try again.

But, by having a break and accepting help is still helping your loved ones, it might not be as direct, but the Care Giver needs to have time to themselves. To give the best possible care they need to be in good frame of mind and don’t feel stressed and exhausted as they may be less patient and find it hard. Also, having someone else care for your loved one breaks up the routine for them as well which benefits them.

A Taste of ‘Charlotte’

Charlotte stood in front of the mirror, the open window allowed a gentle breeze of fresh air to filter through the dingy net curtains and penetrate the stale odour of the somewhat dismal surroundings. She could feel the coolness of the air against her near naked skin, the way it teased the fine material that gently brushed her perk nipples. She admired her reflection, sure she was no beauty but she had a body that every woman and man would die for. Her long brown wispy hair hung loose down her back just touching the top of her red lace thong. She wore no stockings tonight as she wanted to emancipate from the obvious but the glaring red lipstick was no mistake.

Slipping into her denim mini skirt and lacing her ankle boots she was now ready to take on the hunger she was longing for. One quick glance in the mirror Charlotte grabbed her tatty but soft leather jacket and her bag with her essentials and left the apartment. Stepping outside onto the Brooklyn cobbles it felt pleasantly warm considering it was approaching 9:45 in the evening in mid September. Charlotte could hear the muffled voices as she bounced braless along Bergen street, such a great feeling, all women should for sake their bra’s every once in a while, but for Charlotte a bra was something that was used purely to be removed in anticipation. As she fast approached Smith Street she could smell the aromatic mixes of delicacies that were famous in this area with everyone competing for footfall. Charlotte was hungry alright but not for culinary delights, tonight she had to satisfy her insatiable yearning desire.

Stopping outside ‘Joe’s', a small eatery and bar which played a mix of Jazz and soul full sounds, Charlotte caught her reflection. Surely this has to stop soon, a woman in her mid 30′s should be satisfied and not need to crave such taboo but Charlotte knew she had no choice as she entered the bar.

The bar’s real name was ‘Jazzy Joe’s’ and Charlotte had been introduced to it about 5 years back when she took the apartment in Bergen Street. She had found that she quite liked the seediness of it and it suited her, with the decor slightly outdated and worn with red and black wallpaper now nicotine stained. She almost felt like part of the furniture often in here 3 or 5 times a week. It was owned by a man named Joseph Falkner Junior, he was the son of the original owner also called Joe who unfortunately had died in a freak accident in an upstairs room. No one is really sure what quite went on and it was never mentioned. The bar was often frequented by passers many would walk in then out. This made Charlotte laugh as she knew they just needed to live a bit. It was friendly and Charlotte found herself exchanging idle chat with the regulars some even did her a favour and she would return it allowing fuel for her fire.

Charlotte ordered a neat scotch and she seated herself at the bar seductively with one long slender leg just touching the floor and the other resting on the rung allowing any predator to get a glimpse of her thigh. She drank far too quick and had to order another this time she slightly twisted on the stool to get a view of the doorway. The warm liquor was an instant hit and she could feel the heat wash through her as her thoughts turned to tonight’s activities.

Several neat scotches later Charlotte had already dabbled in an aperitif, a brief dalliance, given head to a local who often used the bar for ‘a quick one’ before he moved on to where the nightlife part of Smith Street came alive. They all knew Charlotte and no one ever complained and why would they. She was like the proverbial itch, you scratch mine and I’ll scratch yours.
